Web Design DIY – Why you shouldn’t do it!

This week’s blog post discusses web design, and why you shouldn’t DIY it. Read on to find out why you should leave it to the professionals.

Let’s start off with a reference to one of the most well known TV adverts in New Zealand. Yep, the Mitre 10 advert with the three children discussing putting up a retaining wall. While that advert does conclude that DIY is in our DNA, there are some things you just shouldn’t do yourself! And although we’re discussing web design here, not retaining walls, in the words of the children, she’s a pretty big job!

Now this is not to say that you couldn’t make a website yourself. With all the website builder tools and programs out there these days, you may be thinking, ‘Well, why not do it myself?’. But the reality is that those programs will only get you so far. You may have a functioning website, but it will most likely be lacking the features that users have come to expect on modern websites. Take a look at the list below:

  • Search engine optimisation
  • Professionalism
  • Mobile Optimisation
  • Responsiveness
  • Interactive features
  • And many more!

Let’s discuss a few of these in a bit more detail.

Yes, the ever important topic of SEO. It seems that SEO makes an appearance in almost every one of our blogs! There’s a reason for that, it’s so important in the world of web design today. Search engine optimisation is a vast topic, but basically, it’s how friendly your site is to search engines. Search engines are not as smart as you may think. Yes they can find almost any website for you, but they don’t know a lot about your site unless you help it to understand. This means making your site readable in every possible manner. The better you do that, the better your ranking, and the better your ranking, the more likely it is that people will visit your site!

Is it worth trying to appease the search engine overlords yourself? No! Let the professionals do it for you! There’s a good reason that there are hundreds of SEO agencies out there . They realise how big of a job it is to get websites up to standard, so all they do is work on SEO for their clients websites. However, this is not to say you need to go to an SEO agency, as any good web designers/web developer should know all about SEO.

Using a website builder will give you a website, but will it look as professional as if a web designer had made it? Chances are, probably not! You can certainly give it a good go, but web designers are trained to develop professional sites. They can even ensure your business branding is used effectively throughout the site. Why spend the time making a DIY website when a web designer can do the job for you!

Mobile Optimisation

Some web builder tools do a half decent job of optimising your site for mobile, but they generally aren’t as optimised as they should be. The end result is a website that doesn’t fit the screen properly or that doesn’t resize images and text to suit the device. You’ve probably seen sites like this before. They look fine on a computer, but they look or perform poorly on a mobile.

All of these features are not something the average person would consider when building a site. While you could research and implement all of these features yourself, you would undoubtedly be better off using a professional. Web designers work with you to make sure your new site is exactly the way you want it to be. They’ll also make sure your site meets the newest web standards. And that list of features above, they’ll easily be able to add all of them, and more! This is what they’re trained for, web designers and web developers are here to help!

Web designers are here to help!

So, making a DIY website means you may miss out on the above features. What else is there to think about? You’ll also need to consider the following:

A great website takes time to make. Even if you skip out on the whole web design process, and go straight to building the site, it’s still a big time commitment! Take it from us, we know just how long it takes to make a site from scratch. Even revamping a site requires a lot of time and effort. So save yourself the time and leave it to the professionals.

If you run into any trouble while you’re making your own website, it’s unlikely you’ll have much support! And even if you do, you may not be able to let the support team know what’s wrong. This can make a small problem much bigger! Web design professionals are experienced in dealing with issues and bugs, so they can deal with it themselves.

You may be able to deal with this bug easily, but website code bugs aren’t so easy to deal with!

So DIY – Yes or no?

You may be thinking, well this whole blog post is just to get yourself more business! And you could be forgiven for thinking that, but we’d much rather you get your site done correctly first time, than spend hours on a site that either looks sub par or worse, performs poorly! And at the end of the day, we love creating beautiful websites that suit you and your business. So we’d love the opportunity to do it for you!

“Ok I’m convinced, I’m not going to DIY my website, so what now?” If this is you, you have a wealth of companies to choose from. There are thousands of web design companies out there, but if you’re reading this, you’ve found one who is extremely passionate about making great websites! So why not let us design your dream site!
